I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread with the mix's u all find ur suggies like that are a good ratio.  I know it would give me more ideas.  Mines fav seems to be:

papaya
apple
pear
mango

total= 1.9:1
total with Iams= 1.7:1
If you put 1/2 again of papaya its 2.2:1

or they like the above (with 1/2 again of papaya) plus blackberries ...total 1.9:1 (inc. Iams)

or they like the above with figs total= 2.0:1...total with Iams 1.8:1

Ive bought butternut squash today and sharon fruit so going to do a mixure with them.

What do yours like?Huh?? Grin

Mine especially love papaya, collard greens or figs mixed with other veggies/fruits. Apple, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, green beans, summer squashes are some of their favorites.

Eos loves anything, the rest of them love Mangos and butternut squash, apples, not very keen on pears, hate strawberries, egg, kiwi

at first i tried making all these wonder mixes crammed full of a billion different fruits and vegs, now i try and simplify things a lot and only put 3-4 different items in each mix, the gliders seem to prefer it that way.

This is useful for a beginner like me, handy to know what gliders generally enjoy.
Ive made my first batch and popped it in an ice cube tray in the freezer - how anal is that - I dont get my gliders for two weeks! Roll Eyes
Mine has varying quantities of mango, papaya, figs( I cant believe how different fresh figs taste to dried ones),apple and honeydew melon. I measured them in 1 ounce pieces and simply added until I had the 2.0:1 ratio, knowing that by the time they have cat biscuits, egg, yoghurt or whatever then the entire ratio will be a little under 2:1.

These are my 2 diet plans that Im going to use. 100g of each fruit - except papaya which is 150g to get the calcium up in the ratios.

Papaya - 4.8:1
Fig - 2.5:1
Pear - 1.0:1
Butternut squash - 1.5:1                       11.2: 6         (1.8:1)  -  Including Iams - 12.2:7 -  2.0:1
Sugar snap peas - 0.8:1
Carrot - 0.6:1

Papaya - 4.8:1
Apple - 1.0:1
Raspberries - 1.8:1
Watercress - 2.0:1
Sweet potato - 0.8:1                     11.4: 6          (1.9:1)     Including Iams - 12.4:7  - 1.7:1
Green beans - 1.0:1

tonnes here!
copied and pasted from a full feeding programme I had shown to vet with all supplements etc as got fed up with him trying to persuade me onto the macpherson diet!

half plum and kiwi, papaya and sweet potato 2.05 to 1
half portion of fig, whole of raspberry and sweet potato with half portion of papaya
 ie2.08 to 1
papaya, sweet potoe and apple ie 2.2 to 1
egg, papaya, squash, lemon and a tiny bit of eucalptus honey ie 2.05 to 1
papaya, strawberry, carrot 2.03 to 1
papaya, mango, squash, apple or pear  2.05 to 1
papaya mango squash apple and carrot 1.95 to 1
papaya mango ½ squash apple carrot 2.04 to 1
mango, half papaya, squash 1.92 to 1
sweet pototoe, papaya, honeydew melon 2.06 to 1
half fig/papaya/pear/green bean, orange, squash 2.03 to 1

all of those exclude the iams but cos I supplement and many ratios are over marie said was ok
also flex so a lower ratio will use calcigrubs as protein for that day
a higher one will have egg etc

also did 4 new mushes this week using combination of raspberry, squash, papaya, sweet pot, mango, apple and carrot! but used 3-4 ingredients in each and know on several of them used half portions with whole of others but stupid girl that I am forgot to write them down!

mine seem to prefer the ones with strawberry or raspberry in and I think are better with squash than sweet pototoe but as all mixes all go I am only basing that on how much they dive in to eat it!

the recipe with green beans was a no by the way!
I do the 100g of each too cathrine and find that with 3 ingredients makes just over an ice cube tray full!

I don't use the same quantities of each fruit as they all have different weights, I split everything into 1 ounce portions  as I go along and write them down as I weigh them. So I might have say:-
4 oz figs at 2.5:1
6oz papaya @ 4.8:1
1oz raspberries @1.8:1
10oz apple @1:1

so I would multiply each one -
4x2.5=10
6x4.8=28.8
4x1.8=7.2
10x1=10

then add them up   10+28.8+7.2+10=  56
then divide by however many of ounces there are which in this case is 24

the answer is 2.3:1
by the time I add Iams, yoghurt or egg it will be brought down to 2:1 or under as the diet is 3 parts fruit and veg to 1 part protien - 2.3 x3=6.9      +  1x1=1      aded together =7.9  divided by 4 = 1.975 (or just call it 2:1)

Thats the way I do it anyway, if the figures are to high or low I alter the amounts as i go along - keeping a pen and paper plus calculator in the kitchen to help me, lol. Now how anal is that?!!!! -.- Embarrassed

I do not understand ratios.  I've got stuff here & I gotta get some fresh squash, pears. ect.  Below there is a post I do not understand but I think I can because she says she uses oz to measure.  Sorry, I do not understand all of it though.  Do you have time to explain this?  I mean oz/ratio?HuhHuhHuh??

hi Nancy

So sorry if I have confused you, I suspect most people use the same amount/weight of the various ingredients making it easy to work out, whereas I do not like waste so I measure each fruit into portions so that I can work it out precisely - this is probably the hard way, but Im used to making complex drug calculations so I find it easy.

to make it easy, if we simply make up a blend of 3 ingredients, Papaya, apple and mango, here are the ratios for those fruits
Papaya is 4.8 parts  calcium to 1 part phosphorous
Apple is 1 part calcium to 1 part phosphorous
Mango is 0.8 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorous.

With a sugar gliders diet the aim is for there to be somewhere inbetween 1 & 2 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorous ( 2:1 being the ideal I think).

say you have 1 ounce or one cup or 1 whatever size portion you like of each fruit, you mix these three fruits up and to determine the calcium :phosphorous ratio all you need to do is add up the three calcium to phosphorous ratios then divide them by three because there are 3 ingredients. So

Calcium  - 4.8 + 1+ 0.8 =6.6       :        phosphorous 1+1+1=3

divide both by 3            2.2        :      1

which is a little high, so I would then add something with a low calcium level to bring the calcium to under 2. But to make it work I would need to use the same portion size as I used for above, so if it was an ounce of each fruit then I would add another ounce of say apple-

Papaya is 4.8 parts  calcium to 1 part phosphorous    so still one portion = 4.8:1
Apple is 1 part calcium to 1 part phosphorous           now 2 portions so double it to 2:2
Mango is 0.8 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorous       still one portion        =0.8:1

so now when you add these totals up you get -
calcium 4.8 + 2 + 0.8 = 7.6           phosphorous 1+2+1=4

now this time you divide the totals by 4 as there are 4 portions
calcium 7.8/4=1.95  : phosphorous 4/4 =1
so your new total is 1.95:1 which is within the acceptable range.

I hope this helps and has not confused you any further. I know everyone has their own way of working out calculations.

ratios

right.

all foods contain a percentage of calcium and a percentage of phosphorus. we explain food types as having a ratio, which basically means the amount of calcium in a food compared to the amount of phosphorus is a food.  So very basically for example apple contains equal amounts of calcium and phosphorus which would be shown as a ratio like this 1:1 ca:ph.  Some foods, for example Butternut Squash would be for every 1.5% of calcium there is 1% phosphorus and the ratio would look like this 1.5:1

with me so far?

Good

Sugar gliders need their total diet to be for every 2% or calcium there is 1% of phosphorus, so a ration of 2:1.  So we need to feed a complete diet which is of a ratio of 2:1

Tricky i know but possible.

So, how do we do this.

Example.

If i were to feed the following frutis and veg in equal amounts (for example 100g of each)

Apples, 100g chopped and blended is 1% calcium for every 1% phosphorus Ratio 1:1

Mango, 100g chopped and blended is 0.9% calcium for every 1% phosphorus Ratio 0.9:1

Papaya, 100g chopped and blended is 4.8% calcium for every 1% phosphorus Ratio 4.8:1

Butternut Squash,100g chopped and blended is 1.5% calcium for every 1% phosphorus Ratio 1.5:1

So now to work out what the over all calcium to phosphorus ratio is.

we add up all the ratios, so

Calcium figures first

1+0.9+4.8+1.5 = 8.2

phosphorus figures

1+1+1+1 = 4

To turn this into a ratio we divide the calcium figure of 8.2 by the phosphorus figure of 4.

8.2 divided by 4 = 2.05

Therefore this mix is 2.05% calcium for every 1% of phosphorus Ratio of 2.05:1

The aim is to have all of our mixes to be around about the 2:1 ratio, the ratios for many differnt fods can be found in the Diet section as well as some diets used by others who have already worked out the ratios.

Is this any clearer at all?

just a thought, but if the ratios are really confusing you and you simply cannot get your head around it at all at the moment, trust one of the suggested fruit mixes above, as long as you use the same fruits mentioned in the same quantities mentioned then you'll be ok.  That is what i did to start with, rather than trying to work it out myself i just used someone elese mix until i could figure out how to do it properly myself.
