My little girl passed away the other night for no apparent reason.  I know there always is one and I blame myself, but it is all okay.  I wish I still had her and miss her deeply.  But I've got to be strong.  I have the opportunity to get two more gliders for free this weekend a brother and sister so I'm going to take it.  It may be a little early but they need a few days by themselves anyway while I grieve.

Popper was such a great friend, she loved to play and snuggle and had no problem sitting in my hand curled up.  I don't know what else to say so here are some pictures of her.

All of these pictures were taken within a week of her death =(

Hi - I'm sorry for the loss of your little girl, I really do feel for you Sad

You're getting a brother and sister you say?  Make sure you get the male neutered else they'll be inbreeding which is an avenue best left unexplored to be honest.

Now ... while I do know how much you're hurting at the minute, I've lost suggies in the past so I DO know how you feel.  I feel I MUST say this so your new pair are as healthy as they can be and so this is avoided in the future.

Your diet is lacking in alot of essential nutrients (I saw your post on the other forum), Popper was a little underweight, how old was she?  We CAN help you with this, and you mustn't think we're blaming you for Poppers death, we just want to HELP.  So the best thing you can do now is to listen to our advise.

You need to look into diets more in depth, there is a dietary page on here, go through the list of popular US diets, or if you prefer I can email you a weekly diet sheet.

In every diet regardless of whether it's bml, pml or any other, there NEEDS to be a variety of fresh fruits and veg, a protein source, a calcium source and a multi vitamin supplement.  They form the basis of a very simple yet effective diet.

What happened to Popper is something that affects mainly poorly gliders, we've seen it a few times here in the UK this year (on this board) and they've all been suffering from either a poor diet (in Phil and Lil's case, but Helen is NOT responsible for this!), or they've been under the weather as in Zippy who's face exploded into an awful infection just shortly afterwards, and my little Tinkerbell, it's a long story, I just don't know what was wrong with her Sad.

To get the most out of your gliders you need to look at the diet you're feeding and be honest with yourself, the only ones that will suffer are the future suggies if you don't.  We're happy to answer any questions you may have regarding diets and I think we're a patient bunch, so please make the most this board and give your suggies the diet they deserve.

Hi

Hope your new ones are settling in well.

What is the most important thing in the diet is that the Ca:ph ratio is at 2:1 (or there abouts)  Check out the threads in the diet section of the site to learn more about it.

Don't worry about grammar, we're only interested in the important bits Smiley

Right ... the protein sources, cooked turkey is ok, so long as it's not canned or deli meat, any meat you give them must be unseasoned.  I'd ditch the ham, and doesn't that tend to be seasoned (I'm a vegetarian so ...).
Other protein sources you could offer are broiled chicken (unseasoned), boiled egg, or a high quality cat biscuit.

Fresh fruits ... great Smiley, but try and go for some of the ones higher in calcium or with a neutral ratio, things like papaya, apple, pear, there's a list in the diet section with their ca:p ratios.

Fresh veg, you don't need to remove the beans to feed, carrot is great, you could try adding other things too, like butternut squash, sweet potato, broccoli, spring greens, snap peas.  Again there is a list of the ratios in the diet section.  Try varying the fruits and veg as they all contain differing amounts of vitamins and minerals.

Radish?? Your suggies eat radish?  Ewwwwww!   Grin

The raw almond once a week isn't necessary, but it's not going to do any harm if they like them Smiley

The baby food ... I'm not a baby food fan, it's not something I use, you must make sure that there is no onion or anything from the onion family in the ingredients.

Frozen nectar?  Are you referring to a leadbeaters mixture here?

No its fruit nectar, and I mix 1 teaspoon of powder vitamins and 2 teaspoons of powder calcium and put it in a jug, then pour the jug into the ice trays and freeze it...cut one in half for two gliders.  Its easier than sprinkling it on their food and they love nectar...soo....

I'd stop doing that to be honest, you don't know exactly how much they're getting, if they like nectar then get some gliderade, but Id use the vitamins and calcium nightly, and just a sprinkle.  Too much calcium is just as bad as not enough.
