Protein

We all know the problem with suggie diets is getting the ca:p correct right?  Well have you considered just how bad MOST protein sources ratio's are.  Don't forget to get the diet balanced, we need a ratio of no less than 1:1 and no more than 2:1 and the ratio includes the protein source.

Here's a list (I still haven't figured out how to use the table function yet ..) of some commonly used protein sources and their ratio in order to help you get it right.

Beef 0.06:1
Chicken 0.06:1
Egg 0.3:1
Mealworm 0.04:1
Pinky mouse 1:1
Silkworm 0.4:1
Tofu 3.6:1
Wax Worm 0.1:1
Crickets 0.08:1
Superworms 0.05:1
Morio worm 0.1:1
locust 0.2:1
Iams 1+ cat food 1:1
Phoenix Worms small 1.2:1
Phoenix Worms med 1.5:1
Phoenix Worms large 3.2:1

Tofu looks good on paper but it contains Phytic acid which binds with the calcium which prevents the body from absorbing it.

Silkworm apparently contain an enzyme called serrapeptase, this has properties that make calcium absorption more efficient, can reduce inflammation, pain and best of all it can break down arterial plaque.

I've done a topic on Phoenix Worms with some more info and where to buy for your information. Smiley

Does anyone here give citrus to their gliders? I do occasionally when oranges are in season. They won't eat the tart ones but they love the sweet ones like navels. And the ratios are great.

My gliders love citrus and since I don't feed an iron supplement, I don't have to worry about too much iron.

Ca:p = calcium to phosphorus. You want your overall diet to be twice as much calcium as phosphorus.

Ok, so looking at these 2 then -

Papaya …………………………….. 4.8:1     4 (point) 8  :  1
Orange, Mandarine ………………..  1.4:1  1 (point) 4   :  1

Is that right? I was reading it as 4 : 8 : 1 I think!!
So calcium on the left, phos on the right?
Thanks.
