i am so worried about my two boys, i have finally booked the dreaded snipping day...

I admit that i have been putting it off... i am not planning on breeding or anything (leave that to the real experts) but the thought of leaving my gliders with strangers scares me...

To be honest, there are no glider vets anywhere near me and so (after phoneing around) i found a surgeon in Huntingdon, i have booked for the 6th of feb. After booking the big snip for both of my boys, i got so worried i made my boyfriend ring the vets back up. He actually spoke to the surgeon, and he seems to know his stuff, and he's one of the best ones at the (posh) clinic... but still, my tummy's doing backflips. the vet told us that he wont do the procedure if, after his research, he's unhappy with any part of it. he also said to ring if we have any worries... i think i'll call him on monday...

aaawwwww! damn my infernal nerves!

This is actually a very simple surgery - far simpler than in other pet species like bunnies for instance.
Take a look at our neutering info here and if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

sarah - does your vet have an email address?  I have a photographic powerpoint presentation thingy I could send to him, put together by a knowledgable vet in the US.

I don't know his email, but here is their website, there might be a contact email there but i can't find it. i think i'm just gonna give them a sheet of paper telling them anything i'm worried about (like don't put pine sawdust with them)... i'm probably worrying over nothing, he'll do his research... hopefully i'll be able to chat to him when i drop them off tomorrow.

Sarah, if you take a clean pouch for your glider, thet will probably put the glider in your pouch when he wakes up. And if the vet uses isofluorane as the anethesia, when they turn it off and turn the oxygen up, the glider wakes right up, no slowly coming to or any of that sort of thing. He will want to get right into his pouch and go to sleep.

I was amazed at how quickly the procedure was over and done with!  We took my boy in for 10am and he was taken home at 10.45am!!

Tell the vet he's aiming for a wound a little bigger than the size of a pin head. Smiley

i hope that they won't want to keep them in the vets, like they do with less exotic animals like rabbits... we're taking the two of them to get to the vets between 8 and 9am.... if he was going to do the procedure right away, wouldn't they have given me a more specific time?

my gliders get excited/jumpy around strangers and weird smells, they'll probably crab at the nurses and scare them silly...

....hehe, the last time they crabbed was a few months ago when i tried giveing them boiled egg... they hated the smell and crabbed their little hearts out, not stopping until i took the bowl away....

im so worried about tomorrow!!!  i know i'm makeing a big deal out've nothing, but i'm a pessimist.

Try not to be worried or act worried while with your gliders. For their sake, fake optimism and confidence. Your animals take on your worry or fear and this puts them on hyperalert because they don't know what's wrong but they know something is very wrong or you would be ok. That's no way for an animal to go into surgery or any other unfamiliar situation. If you are confident and optimistic, they will feel much more secure and their stress hormones will stay in check which makes for a better outcome.

well, they are both home again and seem sleepy but ok. they are gona be drowsy for a few more hours, he gave them painkillers that also calm them. i dropped them off and my boyfriend picked them up (i was at uni). he met the surgeon and apparently he was a really nice guy who knew his stuff.

They had never had gliders in before - appently their were 9 vet nurses in the room when they were going to sleep. everyone fell in love with them.  Smiley

Im so glad it went well, this is something I will be having done to my male joeys in the near future (I am going to be a bag of nerves myself so can relate to how you felt) Keep us updatd on his progress,

Did he stitch or glue at all (the vet i mean) or was it the same as maries with just a small wound

the wound on each glider is about half a cm long (maybe less) and he used glue. Halo was fine, but Muse woke up very fast and started licking the wound, opening it up. the vet put him back to sleep and sealed it. he was calmer the second time he woke apparently. i wish i cud've been there to hear this first hand from the surgeon, but i had a uni lecture.... which i couldn't consentrate on anyway coz i was too worried. they seem ok, they've eaten a few iams +1 biscuits (their faverite food). they havent come out of their pouch yet though, i really wana check their tummys, but i dont wanna hurt them...

Just to say, they both seem fine now, i've seen them jumping round the cage and they are starting to eat again, they left a bit of food this morning but i don't think it's much to worry bout.

Had a look at both the wounds and they both seem fine.
