~Enchanted Forest Critters~

« on: February 07, 2007, 11:58:26 am »

When I moved to the UK, I was missing my gliders like it was nobody's business, so my (now) husband went out to try and find me some here.  They weren't as easy to get ahold of here as they were in The States, though.  But we stumbled accross an ad for two boys for sale not far from us...

We went to see them, and I was disgusted!  And I didn't have the money right on hand to be able to buy them off the woman.  They were in a good sized cage (the only thing that she'd done right), but right next door was a pair of barn owls.  I mean, their cages were touching!!!  So of course, the boys were petrified to come out of their nest box...  And when they did come out, it was only for food... Which was a rodent mix.  No fruit, no veggies, no insects.  To top it all off, the woman had 7 VERY yappy little dogs that didn't shut up the entire time we were there...

We talked her down on the price, paid £180 for both gliders and their cage.

Got them home, and now we see how bad they really are...  Rocky was incredibly overweight and very aggressive!!  I still have scars where he'd bitten me and this was about 3 or 4 years ago now...  And poor little Gizmo was the exact opposite...  So underweight and had very advanced bone disease from the lack of calcium in his diet.  After going to the vet who didn't hold out much hope for him, I did what I could...  And he lasted less than a year with us.  He was such a sweet little guy and it broke my heart when he died...  Cry

Rocky is now a very healthy big guy (although, his tail is now going bald) and you can handle him without gloves! Wink He doesn't particularly like to be manhandled, but I suppose I don't blame him.  he does come out for a tickle and treat, though. Cheesy

There really is no point to this post, just thought I'd share my story...  Embarrassed

How lucky these animals are that a caring, accepting and knowledgeable person came their way. All you really lacked was a magic wand that you could wave to make everything all better. Since you didn't have that, you worked hard to give them a good life and you succeeded.

Thanks for telling us about your gliders and how they came to live with you.

Thanx for that little ego boost. Smiley Gizmo was really a special lad... he went EVERYWHERE with me (including college... tucked away happily in my bra).  Such a shame I couldn't have gotten to him sooner. *sigh*

And there's no need to thank me for telling their story...  Once you get me going, I won't shut up about my little monkies Tongue

Thank you so much for sharing,

This kind of story makes me even more determined to educate the people out there who keep suggies in less-than-savoury conditions.  Angry

Mos tof it could have been plain ignorance, which is bad enough, but the fact she kept them next to a cage of owls was downright stupid!  That's what got me the most...  Just can't understand the mentality behind it...

You did your absolute best for little Gizmo, his MBD was obviously just too far advanced.  It's heartbreaking to lose a glider especially when you've nursed and cared for them like you obviously did.  Those poor boys stuck next to a predator - what the heck was she thinking?  At least Gizmo lived out his last days being loved and cared for.

Thank you, all for the kind words regarding Gizmo... Smiley I'll have to see if I can find a picture of him.  The MBD was so bad, you could see the indent in his hips where his body started eating the calcium of his bones...

I've just read your story, and although your time with Gizmo was short, you gave him(and Rocky)lots of love and quality care in the time you had together Cry Roll Eyes
It's lovely to read about the change in Rocky, thanks to the TLC and patience you have shown him Grin
Thank God these wee angels ended up with someone like you Smiley
