If I can pet elvis through the bag while he see's me do it and pick him up under the bag while he still sleeps does that mean that their's a good chance that he will be ok with me petting him not through the bag?

It's impossible to say, each glider is different.  Through the pouch might be fine, inside the pouch MIGHT be seen as an invasion of territory, it just depends.  IF you're going to try, gauge how he reacts, if he's crabby and defensive then do it slowly, do as I said in another post by gradually lowering your fist in to the pouch.
