I have gotten to the point where I can pet elvis but If he see's me doing it he crabs and lunges. Can I continue with this step and will it eventually get to the point that he will let me pick him up and we're bonded or do I have to attempt to pick him up and get him out before he will let me do that. This is kind of a hard question to ask through typing. I'm hoping someone will get what I'm trying to say.

He needs a friend really...  You will find the bond they form when they are happy is a stronger one.  When they bond with you out of sheer loneliness, it's not as satisfying.

You need to be bonded before he'll let you pick him up really.  When he sees you offer him the back of your hand he won't be able to bite that as hard.
