Me and Elvis's bonding has hit a dead end. He won't let me pet him or even try to pick him up. Is it possible for him to never let me get any further? What should I do?

Like a lot of people have already said (myself included), he needs a friend. But, yes, some gliders never become bra babies. That's something that breeders fail to mention. Keep playing with him with feathers and such and giving tasty treats that he only gets when he comes to you. Go at his pace, not yours.

Its still really early days for the pair of you. It took me about 2 years to actually be able to stroke Miah whilst she is eating on the side of the cage, in the pouch was ok but she didnt like being stroked outside of it. She was 18months ish when I got her or so I was told. These little critters can take lots and lots of patience Im afraid.

I don't know when I'm going to be able to get him a mate. The vet wants to charge us $250 to get elvis nuetered.

Ya see, that's the problem... One of the main things of glider ownership is the ability to offer companionship of their own species...

Well I did my research by US sites. I didn't find this site untill after I got him. A lot of the US sites say that you can have one glider as long as you spend a lot of time with it but I now know that that's not true. I WILL get him a mate when I can. I don't have the money to get him nuetered right now. I guess I'm going to have to sell him to a good home because apparently I'm not a good home!

I don't mean to sound so mean, but you have to remember that I am American, too My first ever glider was a single girl, but that was about 15 years ago (and in the US). And I can tell you that she ended up dying very young and her behavior was completely different from any I have met since, which I believe was due to sheer loneliness. The only reason I keep saying something is that I worry about other gliders having a life like my Sugar. That was back when gliders were about $400 in the US, but now you can get them for next to nothing (and sometimes through rescue for nothing at all). I do believe I even did the searching and found some inexpensive gliders near you, which I don't mind doing, but it would be nice if it went to good use.

No one is saying you're not giving him a good home, you've just reached a plateau in your bonding, so lets see, what has changed? Why could you pet him before but not now? Have you changed the soap or shower you use? Have you handled something that has a strong smell to it like onion or garlic? Has somthing happened during your bonding sessions? Did you accidentally startle him or something? Have you had him out in the tent yet?

I have looked at the sites that you gave me Amalthea. Thank you for those sites! When I get the money I will get him a mate, I promise. Me and my mom are actually trying to figure out a way to do it soon. Trust me, I would never want to be responsible for hurting an animal. I'm trying everything I can to help him! I emailed another vet for a quote on nuetering and she said $150. She seemed to know a good amount about gliders too.
I'm pretty sure I havn't changed anything and I'm pretty sure nothing bad has happened during our bonding sessions. I havn't had him out in a tent yet because the tent teared when we were trying to put it up because it was so old. We're going to town today to get another smaller one. Elvis seemed a bit better with me petting him yesterday. I actually opened up the bag and he had his head at the top of the bag. He seems to be getting more confident because he seems like he is trying to come out of his pouch onto me when I have him laying on my chest.

Did the weather drastically change? I know a few days ago was the full moon, was his change in behavior around then? Do you have any other pets that could have scared him?

Ya actually we did just have a full moon and it was around then. He seemed better today but he crabbed at my voice, he's never done that. I have a cat and a dog but elvis never see's the cat. He probably smells the dog though.

Just cuz he doesn't see the cat, doesn't mean he doesn't know it's there.
