oh dear! that was awful too!

just goes to show, even if they look like they getting on okay, anything can happen.

to be honest, i think you put more into breeding then you get out of it.

No matter how cute I think joeys are & how much I would love to have babies from my girls to build up a colony, I don't think I could ever breed, not after seeing some of the stories on here. I'm not sure I could deal with the heartbreak.

It is hard, and what's even harder is knowing that your cute fluffy glider is actually a very proficient killer and capable of killing and eating their own young!  It really is awful!  I've walked in before and caught one actually eating it's joey - it was the dad, the joey was dead so I did leave it, nothing I could do - but it is one of the most disturbing things I've seen!

I can imagine, it's something I'd never want to be faced with. I can barely watch nature programs when there is a chase which leads up to a kill, let alone seeing an animal I love eating it's baby Sad

It would be hard. You'd want to treat them the same, but you'd still be a little upset with them at the same time, though all they've done is what their instinct told them to Sad

Pipe Cleaner was an awful awful experiance, Shyler had been preganant twice before Pipe Cleaner (With her previous owner) and had lost both joeys, she then lost pipe cleaner but succefully raised Eos but then lost her next one.  Eden recently lost 2 little joeys from her pouch as well. Its heartbreaking, and even worse once they get to the Oop stage but still get killed.  Seeing Pipecleaner being eaten alive was truly horrific.

And now Bex unfortuate loss ... what makes this one even worse is that Bex wanted two females so she didn't have to go through this!  But thanks to one unethical breeder ...

Over the past couple of weeks I have had small glimpses of Belle's joey - A foot or a tail sticking out of her pouch.

Last night there was a lot of chattering going on in their pouch and Belle wasn't out at all (which is strange as she is usually the first one up and about in the evenings).  Knowing that she was probably busy with her new joey I left things alone, not wanting to disturb or upset them.

Thismorning I took a sneeky peek in the pouch to make sure all was ok and got my first full sighting of baby.  I left it at that, pleased in the knowledge that all was ok.

This afternoon I went for another peek only to find that the lower half of the joey had been eaten leaving only the upper torso and head.  I just can't believe it....

I have removed what was left of the joey as I couldn't bear to think of them eating it....

I don't know what else I can say, I'm so upset....such a young, beautiful life ended so soon.

It was really quite disturbing and very upsetting.

The reason I got two girlies as my first step on the suggie ladder was because of all the possible issues with breeding - I wanted to get to know them without all the stress of babies.  Especially as a new suggie owner, I just wasn't prepared for this at all!!

It was extremely inappropriate of the person I got them off to 1 - split them from their bonded partners (which they obviously had, even though I had been advised otherwise), and 2 - for selling a pregnant glider to a complete novice!!!

I just hope that my girls will be ok - even though they killed the joey will they mourn the loss?

Bex story is similar to my experience of joeys being eaten and a large reason why i did not want to breed gliders.  It's difficult to describe what finding a sight like this does to you, perhaps the most disturbing thing i have seen.

Ok - change my reply slightly - in MY experience I've never know a parent mourn the loss of a joey.

but keep in mind Marie will have had far more experience than me, i think it safe to say that mums can possibly mourne the loss, even if it is for just a few days

Hiya, I thought I would just put across my recent experience, which I'm still trying to get over Sad I would never want anyone to go through this, I for one will never EVER be breeding again. My two girls were pregnant with twins, and everything seemed to be going fine, untill one night I heard a tiny crabbing sound. One mum had pulled her joey from the pouch and was tearing it apart - whilst it was still alive. It was heartbreaking to hear, and I had to get the joey away from mum, who didnt want to let go. There was nothing I could do to save it, so I had to finish it off myself. The next morning she had pulled the other joey. I was half expecting this and luckily we managed to save the baby which had just had its tail eaten, and I'm now hand rearing it. If that doesn't put anyone off breeding, I don't know what will.
