i was awoken at 5.30 this morning by my housemate who appeared in my room telling me that my sugar gliders had escaped from their cage. i looked down and in his hand lay a limp, wet sugar glider (maverick).

my other sugar glider (goose) had been found in another room in the house, safe, and was returned to his cage. my housemate was firstly awoken by splashing water coming from the bathroom. he got up to have a look and saw maverick in the toilet, splashing around and panicking. he rescued it and then came into my room to wake me up. when i saw him i thought he was dead but my housemate said that he wasn't, he was just wet, cold and shivering. i immediately took him and wrapped him in a towel, to much crabbing (which i took to be a good sign!). after holding him in my arms like a baby for about 15 mins, i decided to put the hairdryer on the towel and heat the towel up gently from underneath. at about 7am he crawled out from the towel and started to jump around my room and then jumped on to my shoulders and across my back. his fur was still a bit damp and scraggy but his head and back were more or less dry.

i left them both munching on figs as i left for work this morning, feeling terrible for having to leave them. they both seemed ok when i left them but i am especially worried about maverick. he is obviously very scared and jumpy right now but i'm wondering if anyone could shed any light on whether he could suffer any more as a result of falling into the toilet. can i rule hypothermia out now that he's jumping around again? i expect he's gonna need a bit of time on his own after this trauma. i'm so worried.

the cage i have is a wire one. it seems that the wire flap was not properly fastened shut and the gliders must have jumped on it and it has swung open. they have obviously decided to venture further for the rest of the night. i don't know how long maverick would have been in the toilet but i'm just so lucky my housemate woke up and saved him (hopefully) in time.

any feedback or past experiences would be extremely helpful.

Hello we had a toilet incident with our Nikki, same thing we couldnt find her anywhere paniced etc, I went for a wee and found her in the loo, we did pretty much exactly the same kept her warm dry and fed her up as much as she would take, give your vet a call and let them know what happened, they may not give you anything now but ask them to stick it on their records because you may need some A-Bs later on, we didnt need anything else but we did monitor our girl very closely for the next few days, any unusual signs and do ring your vet as she may have caught something nasty from the toilet water or from the chill/wet. It would be worth weighing your glider when you get the cance as well so you have it noted ready encase you need to do a quick vet visit.

One other thing do you use any chemicals in your toilet?

The fact that your little one started jumping about is a good sign i think, and also if he is eating then even better.  I guess i'd be mostly worried abtou shock, catching a chill fromt the wet and if anything was in the toilet bowl when Maverick went for his swim.  As Lou has said, phone your vet so they are on standby, keeo him warm and quiet for the next few days and keep a close eye on him as well as his poo and wee (in case he swallowed anything nasty from the loo water)  If you have chemicals in your loo bowl i would take him right to the vets

i do use a toilet block thing that should foam up when flushed. it isn't it the best place though on the rim so hasn't been working brilliantly. there were no bubbles and no foam when maverick fell in though. obviously there may be some chemicals from the block in the water but hopefully they were diluted enough by the time maverick fell in. i can't imagine he was in there for that long as they can't swim! good job he wasn't in there for any longer or i don;t think he'd have made it! thanks lou lou. i'll look into the vet thing.

yes and when you call the vet give them the name of the block you use they may want to see your glider straight away if it has possibly injested chemicals, do you have the wrapping for the block you use or any way of getting the list of chemicals used on it that will help your vet alot,

let us know how it all goes but I would ring the vet as soon as you can especially as you use a block in your toilet
