Hi, I'm sorry this has happened to you!  It's not very nice especially when the dead gliders are mutilated by the others.

To be honest, I don't think anyone knows why they do that!  Some people have never experienced it, some have.  It is just one of those things I'm afraid.

What is more important is why did the joeys die?  What do you keep your gliders in?  What size?  Can you tell us a little more about where they're kept, temperatures, light/dark cycle.  It could also be due to the diet, but I see you have posted in the diet section so I'll post there.

the eye is the most nutritious part of the animals body. during lambing season, crows aren usually seen lingering about ready for a dead or dying lamb so they can peck the eyes out.

this could explain why the eyes are sometimes eaten. Smiley

Crows go for the tongues as well. Horrible creatures.

i agree. i lived on a farm once, and during lambing season, a lamb was born and still had the cord attached. crows came into the field and pulled so hard at the cord the lambs stomach and the rest of the organs came out.

it was horrible! the crows thought it was great like.

What nutrition do the eyes contain?  Have to admit I've not heard that one?

But there's nothing in eyes (well, there is technically but you know what I mean)!  The most nutritious part is offal - liver ... or kidneys can't remember, liver I think!  That wolf bloke that lives up near ray and Lou to mark his dominance over the wolves had to eat the most nutritious part of the 'kill' and it wasn't the eyes!  He did go and cook it first ... wimp!!  Grin

I asked this very question years ago on one of the US forums!  The reply I got was along the lines of 'don't want to look in to the eyes of their dead friend'  something like that!

Yep Jen - my thoughts exactly!

When I found Candy (my avvie) dead, I didn't look closely...  I just burst into tears and Mom went and put her in a box for me.  She refused to let me see her, cuz her eyes were gone.  So I am pretty sure it's quite common.

I've been discussing this with my other me!  We think that the eyes are mainly water, they contain viscious (i think ... could google it but can't be bothered) fluid, they're not nutritious BUT, they are exposed, soft and when pierced would ooze fluid, like sap ...
