Over the past couple of weeks I have had small glimpses of Belle's joey - A foot or a tail sticking out of her pouch.

Last night there was a lot of chattering going on in their pouch and Belle wasn't out at all (which is strange as she is usually the first one up and about in the evenings).  Knowing that she was probably busy with her new joey I left things alone, not wanting to disturb or upset them.

Thismorning I took a sneeky peek in the pouch to make sure all was ok and got my first full sighting of baby.  I left it at that, pleased in the knowledge that all was ok.

This afternoon I went for another peek only to find that the lower half of the joey had been eaten leaving only the upper torso and head.  I just can't believe it....

I have removed what was left of the joey as I couldn't bear to think of them eating it....

I don't know what else I can say, I'm so upset....such a young, beautiful life ended so soon.

I am so sorry for you... Sad Those poor gliders.  The Mom was probably just so stressed after everything.  Poor girl.

Oh Bex ... I'm REALLY sorry!   Sad

I really think you should complain bitterly about this!  Are you a member of RFUK?  I know the person you bought your suggies off is a regular on there ... complain in public (but don't mention names).

Reptile Forums UK.  It's a large forum that's always full of drama (and arguments) a bit like GC!  Grin

It was really quite disturbing and very upsetting.

The reason I got two girlies as my first step on the suggie ladder was because of all the possible issues with breeding - I wanted to get to know them without all the stress of babies.  Especially as a new suggie owner, I just wasn't prepared for this at all!!

It was extremely inappropriate of the person I got them off to 1 - split them from their bonded partners (which they obviously had, even though I had been advised otherwise), and 2 - for selling a pregnant glider to a complete novice!!!

I just hope that my girls will be ok - even though they killed the joey will they mourn the loss?

No, they won't mourn the joey.  They would mourn a partner but not a not yet OOP joey or a just OOP joey.  They don't have the same kind of feelings as we do else they wouldn't have been able to kill the joey in the first place.  There is no love or compassion, just an instinctive need for company.

Well, to some degree i might disagree, but only from the one experience i had, Marie will certainly know better than me.  When Shyler baby Pipe cleaner was killed and eaten by his uncles and dad he was 1 week oop, Shyler seemed a bit lost for a few days and seemed to be looking for her baby, even though it was the baby she had abandoned and left to be killed, i think she still missed him.  Certainly nothing compared to the loss of a partner.  Yes, those who sold these ladies to you should NEVER have spilt them from a partnership, the wrong thing to do.  I had t bonded male with two females, both females were carrying, they came to me late in the "pregnancy" and both females killed the joeys just from the stress of being in a different house, so you must not blame yourself in anyway for this, there is nothing that you could have done to prevent this.
