I have heard sugar gliders were recent imports into America, in the 90s, and Australia bans exports of its wildlife...does this mean the original gliders were illegal imports, or were they maybe surplus from smaller zoos and sold on? Sorry if this is a dumb question or has been asked already, just curious!

The suggies we have aren't Australian, they are far more likely to be from Indonesia as there are large 'farms' out there. I think the first pair in to the UK (in more recent years) were LEGAL, however after that many have been brought in to the country illegally.
The first EVER suggies in to the UK did come from Australia and there went to London zoo in 1865!!

Pet gliders in the US came from the big glider farms in Indonesia, too.

The hardest part of glider farming is teaching the dog used to herd them to climb trees. phear

There's always one isn't there? They're not specifically glider farms, they captive farm a lot of reptiles, and various other things too.

That one is usually RaY, too You've got to remember that not everybody sees animals as a loved part of the family. Especially in the poorer countries, they are seen as a way to make money.

When gliders first came to the US, many of them were "farmed" like rabbits are farmed, in hanging cages in barns.

According to Stephen Jackson in the book Australian Mammals Biology and Acptive Management, Possums and gliders have long been held in captivity with records suggesting that considerable numbers of sugar gliders were held as pets as early and the 1830-1840s (Gunn 1851)
