hi i have a joey he is 18 days old he is starting to move about more and is very aware, he's gorgouse. i'm thinkin maybe in the next couple of weeks that i should start putting a bit of food under his nose to get him used to the smell and he'll want to lick it. do you think 5 weeks is sufficient enough to get him started? then take him out of mummy's cage at 8 weeks? i will be feeding him (this is all what i have reserched for a formula) baby cereal and baby foods (no onion or garlic based ones), puppy milk, calcium, necter (gliderade). and gradully lump it up week by week as he gets used to it and get him on fruit and veg and mealworms. i'll try leedbeeters aswell but my three adults don't like it for some reason. also my adults like a nibble of baby rusk as a treat do you think a bit of that mixed with some of the pupy milk will be a nice tasty treat to get the baby's taste buds going? any suggestions to keep him lovely and healthy? xxx

you should leave the joey in with his parents till as said 3 months out of pouch, he is still gaining all his vitamins and minerals from his mum, he will be weeed by his mum and will start on their food when this happens.  Also mealworms should only be a treat not overy nutritious.

You don't need to do anything!  The baby should stay with mum for at least 8 weeks.  Joeys don't HAVE to stay with mum for 12 weeks, they should be fully weaned by 8 weeks.  Most breeders like to hang on to the baby for another couple of weeks to ensure that s/he is eating properly by him/herself.

You will find the joey will find the food bowl when he is ready.  I wouldn't give my adults leadbeaters so there's no way in hell I'd give it to the joey!

Why are you wanting to remove the joey now by the way?

i don't want to remove him now i just want to be ready for when he's on his own. i'm not getting rid of him either he's staying put  Smiley just making sure. his mums being good with him he is still feeding. i don't have to do anything she's taking care of it. i just want to make sure he's getting everything he needs and when the time comes to be on his own he's got the right food to start off with. everywhere you look on the internet people have different opinions. everything is fine as it is and i'm not changing anything. he's got big ed to get used to as well i'm putting him with my other boy wen he's much older.

Yep. What Marie said.

Mum and Dad will show the little one where the 'big suggies' food is and what to do with it. He will learn by example as long as he is left in long enough to do so.

You will need to get littlun and big ed neutered before you put them together.

alot of other sites are American, and most americans think Leadbeaters is a good idea!

Just leave baby with mum until about 12 weeks to be sure, and then get him and Big Ed neutered if you are wanting those two to live together. Once they have both recovered from the op and are healed, you can start with introductions.

I'm pretty sure that most of us (americans) STILL think it's a good idea... I never liked it (BML- neither did my gliders for that matter.) and am stubborn enough that I stuck on my own thing. lol. (keeping Ca:P in mind, of course Cheesy)
