It is with great sadness and shock I have to post of the loss of Yan, one of my beloved wee gliders Embarrassed
I got Yan, her mate Ink,their son Duffle and daughter Daisy and Duffle and another female Indi, making a sweet little colony of 5, from Sash back in March this year Roll Eyes
They were a happy little group, but at 1am this morning, as I was about to feed them, I found dear little Yan forever asleep in her furry bed Cry
I was shocked more than words can say, and more so, because her eyes were missing and she had a wee bite on her nose Shocked
(there wasn't a mark or bite ANYWHERE else on her)
Her wee hands and feet were tightly clenched and she wasn't very cold, and rigormortis hadn't set in, so I think she probably died a short time earlier Sad
There was NEVER, EVER any squabbling amongst this little family, and Yan was fine on Thursday morning...clambering out of the cage and eating her fruit and veg, and there was nothing to suggest anything untoward about her. When Sarah(Sash) took her in, Yan and her then partner Onion, HADN'T been fed correctly, and she suffered HLP shortly after her arrival..but with Sarah's devotion and TLC, she nursed Yan back to health at that time.

I know without a post mortem, there is really NO way of knowing for sure is she suffered a heart attack, or died from some other health problem...or worse scenario of having been killed by her family, though I would have thought there would have been MORE apparent injuries than a cut to her nose Huh....and all one can do is speculate as to how she MAY have died...BUT....I would still appreciate your thoughts  Cry
Had her time come Huh
Did one of the other gliders try and revive her(bite on nose) Huh

(I have spoken to Sarah today, and she is just as gutted, but she knows how much I loved Yan and the rest of the wee family) Cry
Her thoughts were that I found her fairly quickly, and the family would try and dispose of the evidence in order to keep their nest clean, and I could have been left with little remains instead Shocked

My gliders get lots of fresh fruit and veg, chicken Iams and lots of stuff from Marie's shop such as gliderade, glider booster and glider cal, acacia gum, bee pollen, apple biscuits/treats and yoghurt drops Cheesy

Sleep tight my beloved little Yan. You stole my heart in the short time you were here. You were quite frail at the beginning, but had put on some weight since coming here, and there was NOTHING I wouldn't have done for you, my wee girl Cry
One day, we will be reunited again at the Rainbow Bridge.
God Bless,
Mummyxx

I'm sorry that your glider died. I don't think that any of the other gliders had anything to do w/her death. Missing eyes in dead gliders has been observed before although I don't know anyone who truly knows why.

We often don't know why they die when they do. All we really know is that gliders and other prey animals are very very adept at hiding any illnesses or conditions. It's just a survival mechanism.

If all of your other gliders seem fine, are maintaining weight, and playing as usual, they are probably fine.

Oh no!  I'm so sorry!  What you have to remember is this little one wasn't fed properly BEFORE Sarah got her, so this could have affected her more ways than we realise.  It's probably no comfort now but she died in a happy home knowing that someone cared for and loved her.

As for the eyes, I think that's something we'll never know, I asked recently on one of the US boards and no one over there had experienced it!

Thanks Marie....I really did love her, but to hear it from someone else is so reassuring and this is what I so need ATM  Cry
Just reading this set me off(again). I know the pain will ease, but it's just SO hard. I have lots of experience with chinchillas but gliders are all strange new territory to me, and I try so hard to get it right for the wee critters Undecided

About the lack of eyes (which was gruesome)..is this something that has happened regularly/previously here in UK? Undecided Shocked

Thankfully, the other 4 gliders are fine and none the worse off for the loss of their mum and partner....long as they get their food, they seem happy enough Cheesy

I'm just so glad Yan and I had almost 4 months together..but HOW I wish it could have been MORE(even though quality is better than quantity Cry Cry

It's not a case of 'getting it right', your other suggies are all healthy, you just don't know what internal problems she may have had due to her previous poor diet and HLP.

The eye thing has happened a couple of times to me, I've not had many deaths but those that do die always seem to have their eyes removed which is just awful!  But there must be some reason for it.  I think it's just one of those things, something we'll never know why but something we must be prepared for.

hiya Kim.

i got my five gliders off Sarah too! i have Onion, and i have realised that in the past she may not have been fed correctly, she is a scrawny little thing who walks a little differently from the rest. she is as sweet as anything though.

i thought you may find it interesting to know that i have Yan's family. I have her mate Biscuit who Yan had a son, Widget, with, who then had a son himself called Gum (gizmo). I have Biscuit, Widget and Gum who are related to Yan. (i also have Onion and Spice but they are not related to her (hopefully). maybe Onion is her sister if they were together originally?

I heard she was called "THE CRAB", lets just say, it runs in the family! Gum (Gizmo) doesnt bloody shut up!

im so sorry about Yan. I knew she had passed away from your post on ChinchillaWorld, but still, it so sad. She might not have had a good start to life, but at least she had a good middle and end!
