I've been rescuing little furries for about 8 years now and this is the first time I've been asked to take in a glider so I'm not really in a position to pass judgement because I don't know anything either.

I'm not condoning his present "care" but most times it's the people who sell them that should be shot - since trying to find information on rare and unusual animals you wouldn't believe some of the dreadful "advice" I've received.

I'm off to collect his cage this morning - still looking for ideas on what to collect him in and he STILL needs a name  Tongue

I think it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.  It's actually the responsibility of the new keeper to research the animals requirements, but it is also the responsibility of the sellar to be able to give adequate care advice.  He himself should have researched before he got the suggie, and the person that sold him a single glider (IF that was the case) should be given a stern talking to!

To bring him home, I'd speak to the chap you're getting him from and find out if there is a nest box or a pouch in the 'cage' that he uses regularly.  Depending on the size would depend on the size of carry case you need.  It's always best to take something from their previous home so there is something of comfort at the new home.  Cheesy

I research all animals but that's just because it's in my nature, I do this for all animals even ones I don't have a hope in hell of ever owning (like meercats) and even some I don't think should really be kept in captivity (like meercats!) but not everyone's like that.

I know what you mean though if you're taking on a life form you really should equip yourself as best you possibly can and these days with the internet there's really no excuse for plain ignorance.

Only 17 days till I fetch him now AND WE STILL DON'T HAVE A NAME lol

Well, I like Walt.  But I don't tend to name things until I see their personality, then a name tends to come to me.  Smiley

Last minute tips ... there's probably loads that I don't even think about.  I suppose just bear in mind his crabbing will be through fear not aggression (same as all joeys even if they're in pairs or trios), and take things at his pace.  It's important to spend as much time as possible with him but you also need to gain his trust st his pace Smiley

I always like it when you give pets human names like Norman or Clive but some people think that's weird!

When we get our first pair the plan is for God names like Thor and Zeus. Not sure I could trust one called Hades though!!!

yes "his" pace is the operative, I've worked with chinchillas and they take a time to accept a new owner too, I had a 6 year old once who wouldn't come near me for 2 years but I can't describe the joy when she finally did come to me of her own free will, it was totally magical  Grin

I tend to find the longer their "average lifespan" the longer they take to accept people.........do you find this?

what is "crabbing?"

I had a rescue called Dave, he was an illegally bought in suggie from Europe. He had no socialisation, was kept in a tiny cage in a draughty shop. He came to me with the worst stress related repetitive head movements I've ever seen in a glider! It took him about a year to stop that, but with the help of yoggie drops it took him only a couple of months before he would take them off me. Suggies are generally trusting once they get over the fear.
