Hi,
I've been researching Gliders for a few months and we finally picked up our 2 gliders on Sunday. We've been told they are 8 weeks old.
They've setlled well into there cage although we havent handled them yet or got them in the bonding pouch, we've just been letting them get used to there new home and to us. Not quite sure how long to leave it as the little girl (Crystal) is very shy. Her brother is always out first and seems to eat a lot more.
They have stopped sleeping in the tiny pouch they came in and have started sleeping in the fleecy tunnel i put in there cage. Is it ok to take out the pouch they arrived in and wash it? Just want to check its not too soon to do this.
Any answers greatly appreciated.
Oh and a big thank you to Barum Bazaar for the fantastic bonding pouches!!! I know where to come if I need anymore.

Hi, welcome to SGF. Conrats on the newbies but the male needs neutering asap as he will breed with his sister!

I'm guessing your worried about washing it as it currently has the parents smell on it? If they're sleeping in the tunnel rather than the pouch then it sounds like they may not need the smell to feel comfortable. I don't think you'd have any problems washing it now. Congrats on the new additions tho, they don't stay small for long! Mine were 10weeks when I got them in June, I only really noticed the other day but they are sooooo much bigger now! And don't worry about the shyness, that wont last long. They'l be little houdini's planning their first escape route in no time x x

Thanks for your replies and the info...
No the male hasnt been neutured yet, i have contacted a few vets but none of the ones here have dealt with sugar gliders before although thay have said they would do the procedure, so i'm guessing its a simple one?
I was told aound 4 months old is the best time but can it be done earlier?
Thanks

hey welcome to the forum glad you found the place alright, and thankyou for the compliment about my pouches Neutering wise, 4 months is fine, I normally get mine done around 12 weeks old, just try to get them done before he reaches sexual maturity, a good sign of that is when his "bald spot" on his head starts appearing. Personally though sooner is better than having an accident and ending up with a joey while your girl is so young. If your vet needs to talk to an experienced glider vet then there are breeders and ex breeders on here that will happily pass their vets details into you/your potential vet. Maries vet, Marks vet and my vet have all neutered before and I know there are more on here too. An

Thanks. I have found an experienced vet a few miles down the road (Colin Blakey) who was on the vet list on here, so I will book him in before 12 weeks old, we certainly dont want any little accidents to happen.
Helen, I did remove the pouch and washed it, they had already moved onto there new pouch so didnt seem to mind. How long did it take for yours to come to you, mine are still very shy?

Oh forgot to say, I have been quoted £60 to have the neuturing done (with a pre op check 2 days before). Other vets have quoted cheaper but have not dealt with suggies before so I am a little wary.
Can anyone tell me is this about the going rate and is it normal to have the pre op done? Just worried 2 trips to the vet will be a wee bit stressful for him.

For a pre op as well, that sounds like a good price. Suggie should be fine with the two trips

Thank you, I will book him in for 2 weeks time, so hopefully it wont be too traumatic for him! I think I will take them both to the pre op check so he's got company.
