A Perfect Glider Habitat!

Sugar Gliders are EXOTIC animals and need a lot of space to jump and play. There are many different housing options when it comes to finding a cage for your Gliders. My personal preference was to make a PVC Mesh Cage. I believe that this is the best option because it allows you to customize a cage to the exact size that you need! It's also very easy to put together (ours only took about a week or so). I think that our PVC Cage also smells a whole lot better than the Metal Cages we have. Another benefit is that unless you use a LOT of metal for the locks and doors, you will not have the rust problem that you get with traditional metal cages. I used the "Just For Fuzzies" cage model to build my PVC Cage (justforfuzzies.com) and it was great! They have a very detailed plan and layout on their website that was SUPER helpful. What most people don't realize is that you are paying $400-$500 for a 34"L x 23"W x 72"H cage (without stand)... I paid $250 for the same size in a mesh cage and boy is it wonderful! The Gliders couldn't be happier and I've even seen them GLIDE from one side to the other, something I didn't observe much of in my metal cages. They can actually be Gliders and that makes me really happy. If for whatever reason a mesh cage isn't for you, there are many metal options available. I've used both the "Sturdy" and "Hexagonal" cages from Suncoast Sugar Gliders (sugar-gliders.com) and both worked really well! The Hex cage seems to rust really easily and for us was completely rusted out after being used for only two years, but it may not be a problem for you. It held my colony of five without a problem and I know many people who have housed even more Gliders in it! I don't have one bad word against the Sturdy Cage models. I've used three throughout my time of owning Gliders and they have all held up perfectly. They are actually VERY sturdy and well-built. I believe they can easily accommodate up to four Gliders. Once you've selected your cage, there are lots of really cool ways to "dress it up." Many vendors sell cage sets, toys, exercise wheels and even toy parts if you are really adventurous and wish to make your own! Please visit my "Links" page if you want more information on vendors. As far as exercise wheels go, every Glider cage should have it least one and there are quite a few out there to choose from. The three "Glider Safe" wheels that I would recommend are... The Custom Choice Cruiser by Bourbon (desches.cccruiser.com) , The Stealth Wheel by AtticWorx (atticworx.com) and The TGI Wheel by The Glider Initiative (thegliderinitiative.org). All three are fabulous wheels. My personal preference is The Custom Cruiser, but there is not a nail trimming track available for it currently (downside). However, I've found this problem to be one that is easily fixed by ordering TrimTrax for the Stealth Wheels from AtticWorx. They work just fine with the Custom Cruisers, and trust me, the Custom Cruisers are definitely worth it!!! If you want more information about any of these wheels, please visit the websites listed above. If you are interested in a Custom Cruiser, please note that the best way to reach Bourbon is by phone.

Haven't all the PVC cages been recalled or something? Aren't they toxic?
I sell stealth wheels and wodent wheels and we have plenty of cages in the UK suitable for suggies, shipping from the states for cages would be a lot of money.

HI Marie,
One of the companies in the United States had been selling cages that were coated in PVC and causing many severe health concerns with Gliders! I know of several people who housed their Gliders in these "contaminated cages." There are many posts about them over on GliderCentral so I do know what you are talking about! My cage is not one of the PVC coated ones. Instead, I chose to make the frame of my cage out of a PVC pole base with hardware cloth mesh for screening. This cage style is a popular one over here and not at all dangerous. It allows owners to build a large, roomy cage without spending tons of money on a traditional metal cage. This style is not connected to the "recall cages." I do not know much about coating wire cages with PVC so I really cannot give any more information there other than it is toxic to the Gliders and has resulted in what many Glider owners are calling "cage poisoning."
