We toyed with buying het leus but given the costs around importing have setteld on leus as the best bet but breeding the lines ou is the best chance of keeping the blood fresh

So are you going to breed yours out or breed leu to leu?

Atm I have two unrlated groups of leus (mff & mfff) so my plans are to breed leu to leu and then breed the first babies together so I wont be selling for a year most likely. Mine are coming from texas from 3 seperate pet breeders I found a couple of central breeders but it was clear they were farming so I have had to get a contact tosource the gliders from different locations. All are between 4-6 months old. They havent been couriered yet as havent wired the money while im waiting for the paperwork to get finished this end.
The guy who bought the crems didnt say where he got them but the best price i could get on them was $1300 each so I could afford $9000 for the gliders plus the shipping & qaurantine hence plummed for the leus instead. Have you got a good quarantine facillity?? I didnt realise straight off that they had to go to a specialist facillity.

Hi all,
Leu to Leu breeding seems to be a taboo thing to do in the USA. But from what i understand this is not actually due to any real problems it causes but because it was suspected to cause problems when breeding for colour first began. any feelings on this?

Well yes, exactly Munshkin.

Laura and Michael, I'm going to PM you as I've also got mine from Texas!!!  Lol!  As has my friend in Italy with the Leu hets, Mosaics and Creminos (which is why I didn't go for the mosaic and cremino colours as we will be swapping bloodlines in the future to extend gene pools further).

Leu to Leu breeding was (is?) frowned upon here because it is unnecessary and can actually shrink the gene pool...can't think of the word I'm looking for, but make it harder to find leus with good, clean lineage to pair up.  I think at this point the lines have extended and widened out enough that it is not as bad as it once was.  Smiley

The thing is though Brenda, there are currently no Leus in the UK (not counting those already in quarantine), so these will be amongst the first.  Is sterility one of the issues linked with colour:colour?

Sterility runs in mosaics unfortunatly so its important to find a line where it hasnt been. Have not heard about Leus having this problem though.

I know that some people have bred sterile line mos with leus, so you definitely have to keep an eye on lineage.  Sad  I am so excited that you guys are getting leus!  When I first joined the glider world, they were still pretty rare and very expensive here, but have come a long way since.  I hope that you guys have the same luck without any trouble.  As long as you get a good size gene pool into the UK and people don't start shrinking it by breeding leu to leu, I think you should be fine.

I honestly never ever thought I would have a leu as they are still close to $1000 USD to purchase, but a very special lady listened to a few angels when she asked them who deserved a leu (who would be a good home for one and who could never afford one on their own) and they both said my name.  I feel so extremely blessed that this wonderful breeder had an older leu joey whose original home fell through and she let me have my Seri for the cost of shipping her to me and let me pay her that back a little bit each pay check.  My Serendipity is so beautiful and so sweet!  My parents love their grandgliders, but my dad grumbles sometimes about them and when he met Seri, he said to my mom, "Can I have one?"

I also never thought I would have a mo, but once again, a poor older mo girl had bounced around home to home and her original breeder got her back and then twisted my arm (almost literally!) to take her in as she just couldn't find her a good home.  That breeder is a very good friend of mine and has been since I first got into gliders.  I am truly blessed and although I do not wish our current economical struggles on anyone, I do hope that it comes to the point where you guys all are able to get your dream gliders easily!
