Tilly & Zac (RIP ZAC)

« on: September 20, 2011, 07:31:38 am »

I have had my sugar gliders for just over 2 years.  Zac was 2 1/2 and Tilly approx 3 years old.  Sadly we lost our beautiful kind Zac on Saturday 17th September.  I am absolutely devastated I have never cried and grieved like this over the loss of a pet before, i am an animal lover and have other much loved pets but this has hit me hard in a different way we had a really close bond.

When i bought them i fell in love with Tilly at first sight, as soon as i looked into the cage she came out to be nosey and was so cute, nobody wanted her, she has a scarred face, bald patches and scarred areas around one of her eyes from been attacked when she was young. There was just Zac and Tilly left so i bought them both.

Tilly has always been more reserved than Zac and even after 2 years only I can handle her (i still get nipped a little) but i have always thought that she must be traumatised from been attacked when she was younger.  They have never ever had a fight, there have never been any injuries thats for certain, but Tilly was definately the 'boss' and would crab and grumble if he moved around in bed or dared to disturb her if he had gone back to bed and she was already in there.  Zac was easy to handle, friendly, never once nipped or crabbed at anybody, even if a stranger, and although Tilly is certainly not vicious she is definately not docile in nature. Sorry dont know how else to describe this but I still loved them both enourmously and equally.

This is why i am worried about introducing another to Tilly, but i also know that they get lonely and depressed on their own, i need help, what should i do for the best....Huh? PLEASE HELP

Jayne (& Tilly)

I am so sorry for your and Tilly's loss.  Sad  Personally, I would give Tilly and yourself a week or two to grieve.  After that, I would try to introduce a younger or more docile glider to her.  I had a glider who was alone for a long time because she was too frightened to get to know the gliders that I had planned on putting her with.  When I got a 8-9 week old joey to put her with, she loved it!  She was able to "be the boss" and "mother" to this young one and it definitely cheered her up.
