Hey
« on: December 15, 2011, 02:56:26 am »

Hello everyone Smiley

Me and my partner have been looking to get suggies for a while now. We've done so much research and will hopefully be looking to get 2x females within the next few months. Not in any rush as I want to make sure we know as much as possible.

Owned a few exotic pets over the years, currently have a few beardies that we had from birth. Have had a few bad experiences of buying exotics from people that just didn't know how to look after them. 1 of our Beardies was in a terrible way when we got him, I would hate to be in that position when we get our suggies possibly from a breeder that hasn't a clue what they are doing.

One piece of information I seem to have trouble finding is the most suitable age to get suggies? Ideally we want them from a young age but obviously not to young.

Hi welcome to the forum. Great intro! and glad to see that you plan to do as much research as you can. Smiley

With suggie age, people always seem to want the younger ones, but there are quite a few people on here who say that the suggies they got at the oldest age were their most bonded. So don't let age guide you, and don't dismiss suggies because you might think they're too old.  Smiley

Thanks Smiley

From everything we know so far the bonding process is pretty important, we would want them to bond with us as much as possible and I just assumed the bond would be stronger from an early age?

That is the only reason we were thinking of younger suggies though, if adult suggies could bond with new owners just as much we wouldn't be concerned about it.

Is that the case? Would older suggies bond with new owners just as much as a young suggie would?

EDIT: wjohnw thanks you did actually just answer my question lol

Hi welcome to SGF.  If you specifically want joeys, they wean at around 8 weeks, and most breeders sell them from about 10 weeks OOP onwards.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Nice to see you're wanting to research as much as poss first and you've def come to the right place! Pay particular attention to the stickies at the top of each section, they're deemed as really useful/important etc. I also found Tillie's recipes extremely useful as all the confusing ratios etc have been worked out for you, also I've noticed you've read Marie's guide which has supplements broken down onto daily recipes too, which again was a godsend. A lot of people (incl me) find the diets fairly tricky to figure out.
Ask as many questions as you want, apparently there's no such thing as a daft one, which worked out quite well for me, lol  Huh
As far as age goes, if they've been handles a lot then most people don't have many issues with older ones bonding.
Once you've made 10 posts you'll be able to view the classifieds section and post in there to look for breeders etc, there are some very good ones on here that know exactly what they are doing.
Good luck with reading through all the bumf, I'm sure you'll find it all extremely helpful  Smiley

To help with the age/bonding question, I got 2 females when they were 10wk OOP, they're now almost 9month old and still not fully bonded to me. They will jump all over me during playtime and take food from my hands but they are still pouch crabby and won't let me hold them.
I got a 2yr old male a month ago and from the day I brought him home he will happily sit in my hands and fall asleep in my pockets. He's definately the most bonded so don't dismiss adults. If they are bonded with their previous owners then chances are they will bond very quickly with you.

Emma (post above) also has 2 females that she's had from about 10wk and her's still aren't keen on being held. Hope this helps x

Welcome to the forum!  Smiley  I have gliders I got as joeys (8-12 weeks oop as well as two that came oop in my home) and I have gliders I got as adults (2-5 years old) and I have some who are very bonded from each group and some who are not and a few who really couldn't care less about me, but love their cage mates and tolerate me...lol.  A few of my adults were not bonded with their previous owner, but became so to me quite quickly.  In my experience, age is not a good indication of whether a bond will form or not.

Yup, what Helen said, Mine were oop in April time and I got them in July. Guess they're like humans, some us are tactile and love cuddles/fussing, other just want left to play!
