I know gliders are far less common here than in the states but it's obvious from the amount of new members that glider numbers are increasing, an also a few of the older breeders on here are starting to breed again (if I remember rightly).
Is it maybe a good idea to try and start some sort of record now as there are still few enough to keep track of? Even if it's just on this forum.
Or is there something like this already?x

Hi Helen,
I do give pedigrees out with the joeys I sell but have to leave a lot of it blank as I have no idea of the ancestors of most of my sugar gliders. I offered to start a database a while ago but didn’t get any interest from anyone. Maybe now there are people keeping gliders in the UK it will appear more important?

MOD NOTE: Edited a bit...  Please be careful what it said on the open forum.

I reckon this would be a good idea, but potentially difficult logistically.

I think it would be very tough as gliders have been in the UK a long time now and the lines are all mixed up.

It would just be too difficult to get anything going, I'd imagine.

The problem is no one really knows the lineage of their gliders, fortunately I have  family trees with my new suggies because they're special so when they start breeding and I start selling they will be going with lineage details.

There are still a lot of wild caught suggies coming in to the UK and being distributed by a certain wholesaler who shall remain nameless.  I think keeping lineage is a good idea if you're breeding and keeping gliders you breed and buying in  mate in order to expand your breeding programme, but as for general I think it's an impossible task really.

We could maybe start from now?
I use pedigree forms which I also used when I was breeding Border Collies, all I have done is changed the date of birth bit to OOP date. My husband had offered to see if he could build some sort of database for it (I would have to ask him again) it would be a start. I know in dog breeding a specific fault can often be traced to just one ancestor and can therefore be bred out again in a few generations. its worth thinking about

I know that I got my girls from Mark, who got his male (their dad) from Marie. So some of Marie's suggies must be related to my girls to some degree right? Mine are grandchildren I think ....  Huh

Unfortunately though, I can't remember where leonard's parents came from! I had them that long ago!  So that's where the lineage details would end on dad's side!

Isn't that the same with dogs tho? You can stud dogs as long as they're KC registered, but how do you know that you aren't studding it with a relative somewhere down the line? There are so many dogs in the UK that some must be related mustn't they? Maybe further out that parents and grandparents but still?x

I don't know about studding only KC dogs, but yeah, some dogs are very inbred, it's called line breeding.

It’s common to find the same relatives on both sides of a dogs pedigree that’s why its important to always be trying to breed out faults of any kind. In border collies its epilepsy, eye disease, hip problems (to name a few).
there are now blood tests which will detect carriers of some diseases and if you have had tests to prove your dog is free of a fault it is recorded on the pedigree.
Having relatives far back in a pedigree is usually not a problem unless they are linked with a fault of some kind.
