Unfortunately we see much too much of this here in the States. Right now I've got close to 60 gliders in house...most are permanent residents due to physical or emotionally issues. It breaks my heart to see the state some come in. I try to take pics for documentation and have some nasties. I've got several tail amputees and recently had to remove one's eye due to a massive infection. I truly hope you never see this sort of situation there. I think a huge part of it is the American greed and need for instant gratification. Too many impulse purchases because they're cute or the latest "fad", then when the gliders don't do what the people want, they turn them out. Some are lucky and find new homes, some end up in rescue homes and others are simply turned loose to fend for themselves. It's a truly horrible situation. In the few years I've done rescue, I've seen many supposed "rescue homes" do some pretty horrendous things as well. It all seems to be traced back to greed and the need for noteriety.

i think honestly in the UK it wont be owners, but pet shops and bad breeders like SR. im surprised most of SRs gliders arnt like this anyway to be honest, given experinece with the conditions the rodents arrive in, and the care sheet they give for gliders beckers belief.
what was it? "mostly insectivores" "main diet of insects, nuts and seeds" canned fruit with syrup" for their "sweet tooth". i had such a rant at my shop about the care sheet they were going to use. i think i scared them off gliders for life!

What would be really helpful Kate is if you could start a new topic and post some of the nasty pics you have with a brief explanation of how the suggie was found, diet, conditions etc, we can sticky it then and point impulse buyers to that thread. Only IF and when you have time though  |

thats a brilliant idea marie! it will be like those smoking pictures they have put on cigerettes. words dont seem to work, but the pictures are making an impact. maybe if people can see for themselves how bad a gliders condition can get if not looked after properly, it may just put them off impulse buying.
