just think - we put bay leaves in almost everything! (well unless you only eat chips and cheese like me)

We cook w/bay leaves here in the USA. Maybe the variety is different. I pick them from my garden.

yes - we cook with them here as well - and yes, for the majority of the time they cause no problems (certainly i am not allergic) but some people can be due to the laurel oils in the leaves, and it is toxic, fatally toxic for my little feline friends, although they are sensible enough not to go chewing on things that are no good for them.  There are different types of bay but as far as i know all contain laurel oils.  Humans dont really need to worry about using them, unless of course you get an allergic reaction from them, although important to ensure that you dont eat one (there is a bay leave powder on the market which would limit this danger) as eating a whole leave, due to its difficulty to digest, can cause problems with your insides as the leave is very strong and can be sharpe on those delicate inner bits and bobs.
